What is an oncoplastic breast surgeon?
An oncoplastic breast surgeon is trained in both cancer surgery and plastic surgery techniques. The aim is to remove the cancer completely while preserving the natural shape and appearance of the breast as far as possible.
Is every breast lump cancer?
No. Most breast lumps turn out to be benign, such as cysts or fibroadenomas. Even so, every new lump should be examined and tested, because that is the only reliable way to be sure.
When should I see a breast specialist?
See a specialist if you notice a new lump, a change in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple discharge or inversion, persistent pain in one area, or a lump in the armpit. Do not wait for it to hurt.
How is a breast lump evaluated?
Evaluation usually combines a clinical examination with imaging such as ultrasound or mammography, and a needle test (biopsy) when needed. This is often called the triple assessment, and it gives a reliable diagnosis.
What is breast-conserving surgery?
It is surgery that removes the tumour with a margin of healthy tissue while keeping the rest of the breast. It is often combined with radiation therapy. Whether it is suitable depends on the tumour size, location and your individual situation.
Can men get breast lumps or breast cancer?
Yes. Men can develop breast lumps, most often from a benign condition called gynecomastia, but breast cancer in men does occur, though it is rare. Any lump in a man’s breast should be checked.
What should I bring to my first consultation?
Bring your previous reports, scans (ultrasound, mammogram, MRI), biopsy or pathology reports, blood tests, a list of current medicines, and details of any past surgeries or family history of cancer.
Can I get a second opinion on my diagnosis or treatment plan?
Yes. A second opinion is a common and sensible step, especially for a cancer diagnosis. Bring your reports and scans so your case can be reviewed carefully.
What is a thyroid nodule, and is it dangerous?
A thyroid nodule is a lump in the thyroid gland. Most are benign, but a small proportion are cancerous. An ultrasound and a fine-needle aspiration cytology test help decide whether surgery is needed.
When is thyroid surgery recommended?
Surgery may be advised for suspected or confirmed thyroid cancer, nodules with indeterminate results, large goitres causing symptoms, or overactive thyroid disease that does not respond to other treatment.
What is endoscopic thyroidectomy?
It is a way of removing the thyroid through small incisions away from the neck, using a camera. It is suitable only for selected patients. Dr. Puri has presented research comparing endoscopic and open thyroidectomy outcomes.
What are the parathyroid glands, and when do they need surgery?
The parathyroid glands sit behind the thyroid and control calcium levels in the body. When one becomes overactive, often due to an adenoma, it can cause kidney stones, bone loss and fatigue. Surgery is the definitive treatment in most cases.
What does FEBS (Breast Surgery) mean?
FEBS stands for Fellow of the European Board of Surgery. It is a European qualification in breast surgery, awarded after passing a standardised examination.
Does Dr. Gopal Puri take part in research and teaching?
Yes. He has 31 peer-reviewed publications and 2 book chapters, has served as faculty at national surgical meetings, and has organised CME programmes and quizzes at AIIMS.
